Professor Vasquez received her Ph.D. from the History department at the University of California, Los Angeles. Currently, she is the Chair of the Chicana and Chicano Studies Department at California State University, Dominguez Hills. In 2004 she was a Visiting Research Scholar in the Center for Regional Studies at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. She has taught as a Visiting Associate Professor in the Cesar Chavez Center for Interdisciplinary Chicana and Chicano Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles. Presently, Irene is preparing a book manuscript on the encounters between Indigenous, Spanish and African descendent peoples in Mexico’s colonial north. In addition to the manuscript she is currently translating several Nahuatl versions of the Aztec migration story. Her other research interests include social movement and protest in the United States with an emphasis on the Chicana/o Movement and Afro-Mexicano relations.
