Welcome

As Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, I want to welcome you to our cyber site and invite you to learn about our outstanding programs, faculty, and students.

Our Mission
As the artistic heart of the university and a major intellectual center of the campus, the College of Liberal Arts plays a fundamental role in helping the university fulfill its academic and community missions. Our mission is to develop 'educated people' for participation and leadership in our increasingly complex, culturally diverse, technologically advanced, global society. We have a dedicated faculty that is committed to teaching the basic skills, critical thinking, and imbuing students with an understanding of and appreciation for history, culture, the arts, and great ideas, through a wide range of General Education courses. Similarly, the College has a major responsibility for preparing future teachers. This responsibility is shared with the College of Education. The College of Liberal Arts offers the subject matter courses which groom students to successfully pass the California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET) in the areas of Reading, Language and Literature; History and Social Science; and Visual and Performing Arts. For those who want to teach at the high school level, we offer certified programs in Art, English, Music, History/Social Science, and Spanish Language.

The Faculty
Committed to passing on the most up to date knowledge of their respective disciplines, through the undergraduate and graduate majors, Liberal Arts faculty stay current in their specialties, involve themselves in research, participate in intellectual dialogue at the regional, national and international levels, publish their results in books and well-respected journals, and exhibit their artistic products in prominent places.

Advanced Degrees and Special Programs
One of the things of which we are extremely proud is the extent to which Liberal Arts faculty involve their students in real research as undergraduates. So, when students apply for admission into master's degree or doctoral degree programs, they have a significant advantage over those applicants who have never done real research. Since it would be impossible for me to list all of the outstanding programs in the college, I invite you to take a stroll through the pages of this web site and become familiar with who we are, what we do, and why we do it.

I am honored to be the founding Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and am especially excited about the appointment of 10 new faculty this year who bring with them new ideas, fresh perspectives, and an unimaginable range of possibilities.
